Historically, Labour Day is a celebration of the economic and social achievements of workers, including the establishment of the 8-hour day in many countries during the 1800s. In Malaysia, the origins of Labour Day are rarely thought of anymore, and the general public will normally use the day off to visit family, travel, or to shop at the city malls. Sometimes, though, the day also includes peaceful rallies by workers to advocate for better conditions and to remind politicians to follow through on promises made.

Wesak, also spelt Vesak, is a day celebrated by Buddhists around the world. Buddhists in Malaysia celebrate Buddha’s birth, enlightenment and death on Wesak Day. Many Buddhists go to the Malaysian Buddhist Association building and wait in line to wash a statue of Buddha. They believe this ritual will cleanse their souls and purify them. Those who visit the building also light candles shaped like lotuses and ask for Buddha’s blessings. They say prayers and end their celebration with a vegetarian meal. The celebration of Wesak Day in the city of Kuala Lumpur in southwestern Malaysia ends with a parade. This parade of decorated floats lasts for several hours. One of the floats usually has a large statue of Buddha. People walk beside the floats carrying flowers and candles.
Nuzul Al-Quran is a Muslim holiday during the holy month of Ramadan, on which is celebrated at the beginning of the revelation of the Quran to the Prophet Muhammad. Muslims do not claim to know the exact day on which Muhammad first began receiving revelations from Allah through the angel Jibrail, but many Sunni Muslims observe Nuzul Al-Quran on the 27th of Ramadan. However, in Malaysia, it is kept on the 17th of Ramadan. Nuzul Al-Quran is only a public holiday in areas of Malaysia with large Muslim populations, which includes most states but excludes east Malaysia and a few areas in west Malaysia as well.
