General information
Sarawak, located in the west part of Borneo island and is the largest state of Malaysia. Many believe that it is also the most beautiful place. Whole state is considered to be an area of outstanding natural beauty - here you can find thick jungle, which is more than 100 million years old, sandy beaches and picturesque islands off the coast, and the largest and most magnificent caves in the world with rock carvings and relics aging about 40000 years. Network of rivers and streams connects the inner parts of the island with the outside world. Using the river as a means of transportation the representatives of the 26 unique ethnic groups live here in the jungle among the exotic species of plants and animals. The biggest of these ethnic groups is Dayak. Once being brave warriors and bounty hunters, members of these ancient tribes today are busy with cultivation of rice and spices.
Morning in Sarawak begins with a melody sang by the jungle. Each hectare of ancient forest is filled with such endemic species of flora and fauna that cannot be found anywhere else in the world. These jungle is one of the most wild and unspoiled places on Earth. A huge variety of monkeys, reptiles, squirrels and other animals inhabit this place. Here you can meet a dwarf owl height of 15 cm, butterflies with a wingspan of 20 cm, orangutans - large and very smart monkeys with kind eyes and of course small and playful long tail macaques. The territory of Sarawak is relatively large and some areas are completely impassable and getting there is only possible by helicopter. As for some tribes living in the jungle, they came into contact with visitors only a few years ago! They will welcome you into their homes and treat you with rice wine, show their homes and tools and maybe even teach you the secrets of hunting with blow pipe.
The capital of Sarawak is Kuching, meaning "cat" in translation. It’s a quiet provincial town 32 kilometers from the sea. We recommend you making a stop in this place. There is just so much to see in Kuching surroundings: rehabilitation center of orangutans, picturesque villages of the tribes of Borneo, workshops, woodwork, pottery shop and, of course, Bako National Park where you can come across many species of endemic plants and animals that can be found only on Borneo. In the city there are also quite a few places to visit: old fort, museums, antique shops, the promenade by the river with restaurants and bars, endless streets with souvenir shops and the palace of the Sultan which stands on a picturesque river used as defile stage for the colorful water taxis. Kuching is reachable by a short flight from Kuala Lumpur, Singapore and few other major cities of South East Asia.
From outdoor activities of mountain biking, rafting and fabulous safari through the jungle of national parks and hiking deep into the world's biggest caves, you finally arrive to your hotel by the beach and take an evening off with a cocktail in your hand and a loved one by your side gazing at the red sunset that gives you kilowatts of energy and vivid memories of amazing nature of Borneo island…
